Stand at the Gariahat crossing, type "dentist near me", and Google shows you a little map with three clinics on it. Most people call one of those three. The fourth clinic, two lanes away? It might as well be in Siliguri.

This local SEO checklist is how you get into that box. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and each of the 25 steps below moves at least one of them. You fix your Google Business Profile, collect fresh reviews, build pages for the services and areas you serve, clean up your listings and then track rankings street by street.

The thinking behind it is in our 10-step local SEO strategy guide. This page is the list you print and tick off.

Quick answer: The Google Map Pack (or local pack) is the block of three businesses on a map that Google shows for local searches, picked on relevance, distance and prominence. In 2026 the levers you control most are your primary category, a complete verified profile, a steady flow of recent reviews and local pages that match the profile. Track calls and direction requests, and run a geo-grid rank check once a month.

So how does Google pick the three?

Google's own guide to improving your local ranking boils it down to relevance, distance and prominence. It also says you can't request or pay for a better local ranking. (People still ask us. Still no.)

In plain words, relevance is whether your profile matches what someone typed, and your categories, services and description decide that. Distance is how far you are from them. You can't move your shop, but you can make sure Google knows exactly where it is. Prominence is how well-known you are, from reviews, ratings, links and mentions.

So which one wins? Local SEO experts in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey put the primary GBP category first for the local pack, with proximity a close second. Our local SEO ranking factors breakdown has the rest.

Google Business Profile checklist: steps 1 to 6

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in the Map Pack, so fix it first. It holds most of your relevance signals.

1. Claim and verify the profile

Google says verification tells it you're authorised to represent the business, so the profile is more likely to show up. One profile per location, please. Duplicates split your reviews between them and can get both flagged.

2. Use the name on your signboard

Awkward one. Keywords in the business name sit in Whitespark's top three factors, which explains all those listings called something like "Best Skin Clinic Salt Lake Laser Hair Removal". The trouble is that Google's Business Profile guidelines say unnecessary information in your name is not permitted and could get the profile suspended. Use the name painted on the board outside.

3. The primary category (your biggest lever)

Do this one first if nothing else. Pick the most specific primary category that's true for you, so "Dental clinic" for a dentist and never "Health consultant". Not sure which? Search your main keyword, open the top three profiles and check their primary category with a free extension such as GMB Everywhere. It's a quick job.

4. Secondary categories, but only the true ones

Google asks for as few categories as possible, each one completing the sentence "This business IS a". An interior designer who also does the fit-out can add "Interior fitting contractor". Adding "Furniture store" because you once sold a sofa to someone in Lake Town is how listings get filtered.

5. Get the pin, or the service area, right

Do customers come to you? Then show the address and drag the pin onto your real front door. Do you go to them, the way pest control, AC repair or home tutors do? Hide the address and list the areas you serve, say Behala, Tollygunge and Jadavpur.

6. Hours, special hours, phone and website

"Business is open at time of search" is in Whitespark's top five local pack factors. So update your special hours before Durga Puja, Diwali and Eid, because a profile that says "open" while your shutter is down sends people to a locked door. Use a number that someone picks up. And add a UTM tag to your website link so profile visits show up in Google Analytics.

The profile content bit (steps 7 to 12)

Next, more detail about what you sell, so you match more searches.

7. A description a person would write

Say what you do, who you serve and where. "A family dental clinic in Salt Lake Sector V offering root canal, braces and implants" helps more than three lines of adjectives. Nobody has ever booked a root canal because a clinic called itself "passionate".

Steps 8 and 9: services, then products (yes, even for services)

List every service separately. Say you run a salon in Gariahat: keratin treatment, bridal makeup and hair spa should each go in as its own service with a short description, because each one can match a different search.

The products section works for packages too, and most service businesses skip it. A coaching centre in Howrah can list "JEE Foundation Batch, Class 9" with a ₹ price range and a photo.

10. Real photos and short videos, every month

Google's guidance says photos and videos help you show what you offer. So post your actual shopfront, your team, your work and your interiors, and skip the stock images. We can spot a stock photo of a smiling dentist from across the Hooghly.

11. One Google post a week

Use posts for things people care about: "Puja special: free consultation till 15 October", or a before-and-after from last week's project. That's it.

12. Attributes, and getting ready for Ask Maps

Google has been retiring the old Q&A section since late 2025, and in March 2026 it began rolling out Ask Maps in India, a Gemini feature that answers questions about places using business information and reviews. Someone asks if your New Town café has parking, and the answer comes partly from what you filled in. So fill every attribute (parking, wheelchair access, payment options) and the answers about you will be correct.

Do reviews really move your Map Pack ranking? (steps 13 to 16)

Yes. Reviews feed prominence directly. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and buyers use them to choose between the three businesses they see.

But it's the recent ones that do the work. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 74% of consumers look for reviews from the last three months and 89% expect owners to respond. That's a US panel, though we see the same behaviour in Kolkata, and recency matters as much as the total. A clinic whose newest review is from last Puja looks a bit abandoned.

13. Make asking for reviews automatic

If asking depends on someone at the front desk remembering, it won't happen. Send a WhatsApp message with your review link after every visit or delivery, and keep a QR code at the billing counter. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has templates you can copy.

14. Ask for detail (never script it)

"Great service" helps a little. "Root canal done in one sitting, clinic near Karunamoyee was spotless" helps far more, because it names the service and the area in the customer's own words. So ask people to mention what they came in for. But never write it for them.

Steps 15 and 16: reply to everyone, fake nothing

Reply to every review within a few days. Happy customers get thanked by name, with a mention of the service they had. A bad review gets one apology, the facts, and an offer to move the conversation to phone or WhatsApp (arguing in public never ends well).

And no fake or incentivised reviews. Buying reviews, or trading discounts for five stars, breaks Google's rules and can cost you your reviews or the profile itself. When you spot fake reviews, report them.

Your website and local landing pages (steps 17 to 20)

Your site should tell Google the same story as your profile, in more detail. When the two match, relevance gets stronger.

17. NAP, map and schema on the site

Show the exact same name, address and phone (NAP) as your profile, in the footer and on the contact page. Embed your Google Map and add LocalBusiness schema markup. Your web developer will know what that last bit means, and if they don't, that tells you something.

18. One page per core service, and per area you really serve

Plenty of local sites have one "Services" page and a stock photo of a handshake. A page called "Dental implants in Salt Lake" with real photos, price ranges, FAQs and directions from Karunamoyee bus stop will outrank that generic page.

One rule we're strict about: area pages only for places you really serve. A Behala clinic with a "Dentist in Barasat" page is making a mess for itself.

Steps 19 and 20: a fast mobile page and the right link

Most map searchers are on a phone. Put tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons at the top of the page, and keep it light enough to load quickly on mobile data.

Then check where your profile's website link goes. A clinic with branches in Behala and New Town should link each profile to its own branch page, so the location signal stays clear for Google and for visitors.

Citations, NAP and local links (steps 21 to 23)

Every place your business name, address and phone number shows up online counts as a citation. Matching citations and a few genuine local links add prominence. When Justdial has one address and your website another, Google can't be sure which is right.

21. The directories Indian buyers use

Tick off the ones that fit your business:

  • ☐ Justdial
  • ☐ Sulekha
  • ☐ IndiaMART (manufacturers and suppliers)
  • ☐ Practo (clinics and doctors)
  • ☐ Bing Places for Business
  • ☐ Apple Business Connect (BrightLocal found Apple Maps use as a review source nearly doubled to 27% in 2026)
  • ☐ Your industry association's member directory

22. Hunt down duplicates and old details

Search your business name. Then search every old phone number you've ever had. Merge or remove duplicate listings, and fix every old address from before you shifted from Lake Market to Rashbehari. Our NAP citation guide walks you through the audit.

23. Local links and mentions

One link from a real local source counts for more than a hundred random directories. Think of your trade association, a feature on a local news site, a Durga Puja committee's sponsorship page or a supplier's "Where to buy" page.

Okay, but how do you know any of this is working? (steps 24 and 25)

Two ways: the actions people take on your profile, and where you rank across your area. Searching from your office chair tells you very little, because results change with the searcher's location. (Everyone does it anyway. We do too.)

24. Track calls, direction requests and website clicks

The Performance section of your Google Business Profile shows call button clicks, direction requests, website clicks and the search terms people used. Log them on the first working day of every month. Add UTM tags and a call tracking number on your site as well, so you can see which calls became bookings.

25. Run a geo-grid rank check every month

A geo-grid rank tracker checks where you rank for one keyword from a grid of points (say 7 by 7) across your area, street by street. You might be top three around your Salt Lake clinic and nowhere by Ultadanga. Now you'd know. Local Falcon and BrightLocal both do this. Once a month, top five keywords.

How we use this checklist at FavFly

At FavFly, our GBP SEO team runs this list for clinics, studios and stores across Kolkata, starting with categories and reviews because they move fastest. Nothing on it is clever, to be honest. It's the dull steps done every month, plus a geo-grid check to see what moved. That's how a wedding photographer's profile moved from #20 to the top 3 on Google, how Smiley Dental Clinic's local engagement tripled and how SMCD, a luxury jewellery brand, saw its profile visibility go up 201%. Why bother with the pack at all? Our Google local pack guide explains.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank in the Google Map Pack?

Depends on where you're starting and who you're up against. In our experience, a neglected profile in a moderately competitive part of Kolkata starts moving 4 to 12 weeks after you fix the categories, finish the profile and get reviews coming in. Dentists or interior designers in Salt Lake? That can take several months. And distance still caps how far from your address you can rank.

What's the most important local SEO ranking factor in 2026?

Your primary category. Whitespark's 2026 survey puts it first for the local pack, ahead of proximity, so choose the most specific one that's true, see what your top competitors picked, and don't add unrelated ones to chase keywords.

Can I rank on Google Maps without a physical address?

Yes. Plumbers, pest control people and home tutors do it all the time: verify, hide the address, list the areas you cover. Google still uses that hidden address for distance, though, so you'll rank best near your base. Area pages on your website help further out.

Does posting on Google Business Profile improve ranking?

Google's ranking guide doesn't mention posts at all, so we treat them as a conversion tool. They show your offers and give people a reason to call. In our experience, profiles that post and add photos regularly get more calls and clicks, which is why you wanted the Map Pack anyway.

How many Google reviews do I need to rank in the top 3?

No fixed number. Match the top three's count and beat their recency. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, so 20 is a sensible first target.

What is a geo-grid rank tracker?

Think of it as checking your Maps rank for one keyword from lots of spots across your area at once, then colouring the result in as a heatmap. It beats searching on your own phone, since Map Pack results change with where the searcher is standing.

Start ticking, one step a week

You don't need all 25 this week. Do 1 to 6 first, because a wrong category or a misplaced pin can cancel out everything else. Get the review system going and leave it running. After that it's a monthly habit: photos, posts, replies and one geo-grid check.

In our experience, the Kolkata businesses that hold the top three kept their profiles complete and their reviews fresh for months, while their competitors stopped after two posts.
