Not long ago your customer typed "dentist near me", scrolled for a bit and called whoever had the most stars. Now they can open Google AI Mode and ask, "Which dentist in Salt Lake is good with nervous kids and open on Sunday?" Then, because it lets them, "Which of these takes UPI?"

Google AI Mode is a conversational search mode inside Google Search. It answers longer, more detailed questions with an AI-written response, links to supporting sites, and lets you keep asking follow-ups. For a local business, that means Google can boil your profile, reviews and website down to a few lines before a customer ever opens your listing. And it's live across India in English, Hindi and seven other Indian languages, Bengali included.

Quick answer: Google AI Mode is a chat-style search experience in Google Search, powered by Gemini, open to everyone in India in English since July 2025, Hindi since September 2025, and Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu since October 2025. Google says there's no special optimisation for it; strong SEO, an indexed site and an up-to-date Business Profile are what count. For local searches it leans on Business Profile details, reviews, third-party sites and your website's FAQs, so a complete profile, detailed reviews, clear pages with prices and mentions across the web are your best moves.

What is Google AI Mode?

It's a separate search experience where you ask in plain language, get an AI-generated answer with links, and keep the conversation going. You reach it through the AI Mode tab in Google Search or the Google app, and you can type, speak or point your camera using Lens.

Google launched it as a Labs experiment in March 2025. It now runs on Gemini 3.5 Flash, which Google made the default model in AI Mode worldwide at I/O in May 2026, and in the same I/O 2026 announcement Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch. That's a very large number of people asking questions you'd like to be the answer to.

Query fan-out: one question, lots of little searches

AI Mode uses a technique Google calls "query fan-out". It breaks your question into smaller searches, runs them at the same time across subtopics and data sources, and stitches the results into one response.

Say someone asks for the "best interior designer in Salt Lake for a 2BHK under ₹5 lakh". Behind the scenes AI Mode might search for interior designers in Salt Lake, typical 2BHK interior costs in Kolkata, reviews of the firms it has shortlisted, and their portfolios. Your business can get pulled in through any one of those smaller searches. So you need to be findable for each of them, and a website that's only a photo gallery and a phone number isn't findable for much.

Is Google AI Mode available in India, and in which languages?

Yes. It's available to everyone in India, no sign-up needed, in English, Hindi and seven more Indian languages. India was one of the first markets outside the US to get it.

Table: Is Google AI Mode available in India, and in which languages?

If you're in Kolkata, the Bengali bit is the one to notice. A customer in Behala can ask in Bengali about a sweet shop that takes bulk wedding orders and get the answer in Bengali, which is a nice thing for the sweet shop that has Bengali content on its site (more on that in the checklist).

What hasn't come to India yet?

At I/O 2026 Google announced agentic booking for local services, plus the option to have Google call businesses for you in categories like home repair, beauty and pet care, rolling out to everyone in the US in summer 2026. There's no confirmed date for India. Don't build plans around them yet.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs classic results

AI Overviews are short AI summaries on top of normal results for some searches. AI Mode is a full conversational mode where the AI answer is the whole page. Classic results are the familiar links, ads and map pack, and all three now sit side by side in Google.

Google's guide to AI features and your website describes AI Mode as built for questions that need deeper exploration, reasoning or comparison. AI Overviews, meanwhile, only appear when Google's systems judge they add something to classic results.

So what happens to "best dentist near me"?

It turns into a short conversation. The businesses AI Mode names are the ones with enough detail, reviews and third-party mentions to answer the follow-up questions too, and being third in the map pack doesn't automatically carry over.

Whitespark's guide to AI Mode for local businesses (May 2026, mostly US results) found that AI Mode's local answers show ratings, review counts, prices and hours. It draws those from Business Profiles, reviews, review sites, local lists, news, community pages and business websites, FAQ content especially. Two more findings worth knowing: mobile AI local packs often show fewer than three businesses, and results vary between people standing in the same location.

"We rank #2 in the map pack. Are we safe?"

Not necessarily. The map pack still exists in classic results (our guide to the Google local pack explains how it works), but in AI Mode a buyer can skip it entirely. If your profile says nothing about Sunday hours or kids, and none of your reviews mention them either, AI Mode has no reason to name you for that question.

"Our customers ask much longer questions now"

They do. Google says people ask AI Mode questions nearly three times longer than traditional searches, packed with conditions like budget, area, timing and payment method. If those details live on your profile and website, you're easier to match. If they only live in your receptionist's head, you aren't.

"Most of our reviews just say 'good service'"

Lovely to read, and no help at all to AI Mode, which reads reviews to describe businesses. Compare that with "Got our 3BHK in New Town done in 45 days, team handled all the electrical work". In one line it learns your area, the project size, how fast you were and what you covered. Our post on how to get more Google reviews has simple scripts that get customers writing in more detail.

What has Google confirmed about ranking in AI Mode?

Google says AI Mode uses the same foundations as regular Search: your page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and there's no special optimisation, file or schema needed. Most AI Mode SEO advice beyond that is informed observation. Ours included.

In plain words, there are no extra technical requirements, so if your page can show in Google with a snippet, it can be a supporting link in AI Mode. You don't need AI-specific text files or special markup, and any structured data you use should match what's visible on the page. Google also asks you to keep your Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date, and to keep important content in text (not trapped inside images), supported by images and video.

On the measurement side, traffic from AI Mode is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type. Since 31 August 2026, all sites also have a Search Generative AI performance report showing impressions in features like AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date.

What Google has not published is a list of AI Mode ranking factors. So if someone on a sales call claims to know "the AI Mode algorithm", smile politely and keep your wallet in your pocket. Google's local ranking help page also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. We'd love more agencies to read that page.

How to rank in Google AI Mode: a checklist for local businesses

To show up in Google AI Mode, make your business easy to describe accurately. That means a complete Business Profile, detailed reviews, clear local pages, answer-first content and consistent mentions across the web. It's good local SEO, done thoroughly. Print this one and stick it near the reception desk.

  • ☐ Complete your Google Business Profile: right primary category, services with descriptions, service areas, hours (Durga Puja and festival hours too), attributes, photos, WhatsApp and booking links.
  • ☐ Build a steady flow of reviews that mention the service, the area and the result, and reply to every one, bad ones included.
  • ☐ Create a page for each core service. Add area pages (Salt Lake, New Town, Howrah) only where you genuinely serve and have something specific to say.
  • ☐ Put the answer first on every service page and FAQ: price range, time taken, who it suits.
  • ☐ State prices plainly, such as "Root canal treatment: ₹4,500 to ₹9,000 depending on the tooth". AI Mode can't quote what you won't publish.
  • ☐ Write in the language your customers use. If half your enquiries come in Bengali, a Bengali FAQ page is worth having.
  • ☐ Add LocalBusiness structured data that matches your visible name, address, phone and hours.
  • ☐ Get listed and mentioned across the web: Justdial, Practo or IndiaMART (whichever fits your trade), local news, associations and credible "top" lists, with your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
  • ☐ Check the technical basics: pages indexed in Search Console, no accidental noindex or nosnippet, fast mobile pages, important text in HTML.

The profile and citation side is covered in more depth in our post on local SEO ranking factors. For content, see how to get cited in AI search results.

Are we showing up yet?

Once a month, open AI Mode and ask what your customers ask, conditions and all: area, budget, timing. Note whether you're named, what it says about you and which sources it shows. Then check the Search Generative AI performance report in Search Console to see which of your pages appeared in AI features and how often, and watch calls, direction requests and WhatsApp clicks in your Business Profile performance report. Tools like SE Ranking's AI Results Tracker can also monitor AI Mode mentions if you'd rather not do it by hand.

How we do this at FavFly

At FavFly we treat AI Mode as the next layer on top of Google Business Profile SEO, so our local work starts with the profile, the reviews and the pages Google reads. Two results from our GBP portfolio show what that groundwork does in Google's local results. A wedding photographer's Google Business Profile moved from #20 to the top 3 on Google, and for SMCD, a luxury jewellery brand, our GBP work lifted visibility by 201%.

To be straight with you, those are classic local search results, and we're not passing them off as AI Mode numbers. We mention them because the same profile, review and content signals feed both.

Now a hypothetical. Say you run an interior design studio in Salt Lake with no services listed on your profile, 18 reviews that all say "nice work", and a website that's just a gallery. A good first month looks like this: add every service with a price range, ask your last 20 clients for detailed reviews over WhatsApp, and publish a "2BHK interior cost in Kolkata" page that answers the question in its first two lines. After that, ask AI Mode about interior designers in Salt Lake every month and note which sources it cites.

If you'd like a team to handle the profile side, our Google Business Profile SEO service covers it end to end.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google AI Mode available in India?

Yes. Google rolled it out to everyone in India in English on 8 July 2025, no Labs sign-up needed. Hindi came in September 2025, and in October 2025 Google added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Look for the AI Mode tab in Google Search or the Google app.

Is AI Mode the same as Gemini?

Related, but not the same thing. AI Mode is part of Google Search and runs on Gemini models (Gemini 3.5 Flash by default right now), while the Gemini app is Google's standalone assistant. For local discovery AI Mode matters more, because it sits inside Google Search, right next to Maps and Business Profile data.

Does Google AI Mode use my Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google's guidance for AI features tells businesses to keep their Business Profile information up to date, and AI Mode's local answers show ratings, hours and reviews, so a complete, accurate profile is one of the most useful things you can have.

Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AI Mode?

Nope. We get asked this one a lot lately. Google's line is that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements, so no new machine-readable files, no AI text files and no special schema. If someone's selling you an llms.txt setup for AI Mode, ask them where Google said that. The plain LocalBusiness markup you'd add anyway still helps, as long as it matches what's on the page.

Will AI Mode reduce calls and website visits from Google?

Honestly, nobody knows yet, and it'll vary by business. Some quick questions may get answered without a click. Google says clicks from AI features tend to be higher quality, with visitors spending more time on the site. Our advice is to track calls, direction requests and enquiries in your Business Profile and Analytics, then compare month by month.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are short summaries at the top of some normal results. AI Mode is a full conversation where the AI answer is the main result and follow-ups keep their context, built for longer questions that need comparison or reasoning.

Get your business ready for the next question

Your customers are asking Google longer, more specific questions, in English, Hindi and Bengali, and they expect proper answers back. AI Mode will name the businesses it can describe with confidence.

So this week, fill the gaps in your Google Business Profile and ask five recent customers for detailed reviews. Then write one page that answers your most common question with a real price range, and search for yourself in AI Mode to see what comes up.
