A patient in Salt Lake types "root canal cost in Kolkata" into Google. Ten years ago she'd have opened three clinic websites, compared them over her evening tea and called one. Today she reads an AI answer at the top of the page, taps one link if she's feeling thorough, and books.
So what's the real difference in AEO vs SEO? SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in Google's results so people click through to you. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes your content so Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and voice assistants pick it as the answer they quote. Most businesses need both. And most of the work is shared, which is the bit nobody selling you a separate AEO package likes to lead with.
Quick answer: SEO earns you rankings and clicks in Google's normal results, while AEO earns you a place inside the answer itself (AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets, ChatGPT, voice). AEO sits on top of SEO, since no answer engine will quote a page Google can't crawl, index and trust, and the extra work is mostly formatting: question headings, short direct answers, FAQs and consistent business facts. A small business should start with SEO basics plus an answer-first rewrite of its 5 to 10 most important pages.
First, what is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of structuring your content so answer engines can pick it up and present it as a direct answer. By answer engines we mean Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and the voice assistant on your phone. You want to be the source that the AI, or the featured snippet, quotes when someone asks a question.
The term isn't new. It goes back to featured snippets and voice search, and it came roaring back once AI answers moved above the blue links. Even Google's own guide to optimizing for generative AI search now mentions "AEO" and "GEO" as terms for work focused on visibility in AI search. (Google using marketing acronyms in its official docs. We've seen it all now.)
"Wait, isn't AEO a customs certificate?"
In India, yes, that too. Anyone who's handled exports knows AEO as Authorised Economic Operator, the customs status. Keyword tools show around 8,000 monthly searches for "AEO" in India, and a good chunk of those people want the customs one. Funnily enough, that mix-up is the exact problem AEO solves. An answer engine needs clear context to work out which "AEO" you mean, and it needs the same clarity to work out which "Sen Dental" you are.
AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?
SEO competes for a position on the results page. AEO competes for a mention inside the answer. They stand on the same technical foundation, but you measure them differently and they reward slightly different writing.
This is the side-by-side we draw for clients when they ask:

"Okay, so which one matters more for us?"
For most Indian SMBs, SEO still pays the bills. Answer engines largely pull from pages that already rank, so skip SEO and you've given them nothing to pull.
But AEO is catching up fast, and the numbers are hard to wave away. A Pew Research Center study found that US users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, against 15% for those who didn't see one. Then in July 2026, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users. With fewer clicks, being named inside the answer is now part of being found.
Where do AEO and SEO overlap?
Almost everywhere. Google's own position is that optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO: the same guide says AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google's core ranking and quality systems, and a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link.
So the unglamorous basics help both at once. That means a site Google can crawl and index, pages that load fast and work on a phone, helpful original content written from real experience, clear headings with internal links between related pages, a complete Google Business Profile with the same name, address and phone everywhere, and genuine reviews and mentions from other websites. None of it is exciting, which is probably why so many sites skip it.
"Our agency is pitching us a separate AEO package"
We hear this every month, and it annoys us a little. Google's guide says you can ignore tactics like "chunking" content into tiny pieces, creating llms.txt files for Google, or chasing inauthentic mentions. It also warns that no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems. If the package doesn't include fixing your SEO basics, it's a fresh coat of paint on a cracked wall.
The truly AEO-only part is small: how you phrase headings, where you put the answer and how you format facts.
So where does GEO fit in?
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the closely related practice of getting your brand and content used, summarised and cited by generative AI tools. Lots of people use the two terms interchangeably, and we wouldn't lose sleep over it.
If you want a rough line between them, AEO grew out of featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice search, so it's about owning the direct answer to a specific question. GEO looks at how large language models pick, combine and cite sources across longer, chattier prompts. We've gone deeper on this in our post on how GEO and SEO work together. For you as an owner it lands in the same place: one solid SEO foundation, and content any answer engine can lift a clean answer from.
Does a small business need both AEO and SEO?
Yes, and you can run them as one project. Treat AEO as a layer you add to your SEO work, page by page.
The businesses getting the most from AEO right now are the ones whose customers ask a lot of questions before they buy. A dental or skin clinic in Salt Lake hears "how many sittings does laser hair removal take?" all day long. An interior designer in New Town gets "how long does a 2BHK interior take?" at nearly every site visit, and a jeweller in Gariahat hears "is hallmarking compulsory for gold in India?" constantly. Every one of those questions is a chance to be the quoted answer, with your brand name sitting right beside it.
Say you run a coaching centre in Behala
Your SEO work gets the "WBJEE coaching in Behala" page into the local pack and the top results. Good. Your AEO work then adds one short section to that same page, titled "When should my child start WBJEE preparation?", with a direct 50-word answer under it and a small table of batch timings. That's all. Now one page can rank for the main keyword and also be what Gemini or Google quotes when a worried parent types that exact question at 11 at night.
An AEO starter checklist for your website
Start with the pages that already get impressions in Google Search Console. Answer engines mostly draw from pages that already rank, so that's where a small edit goes furthest. Then work down this list one page at a time (not the whole site in one weekend, please).
- Pick 5 to 10 money pages: service pages, location pages and your most-read blog posts.
- Research the real questions. Search your main keywords on Google and note every People Also Ask question, then add the ones your front desk hears on calls and WhatsApp every week.
- Turn questions into H2s and H3s. "How much does a modular kitchen cost in Kolkata?" beats "Our Pricing Philosophy" every time.
- Answer first, then explain, with a 40 to 60 word answer directly under each question heading.
- Use lists and tables for facts. Steps, timings, documents needed and price ranges are much easier to extract from a list or table than from a long paragraph.
- Add an FAQ section, and be honest about schema. FAQs written in your customers' words still help answer engines match questions to your page. But Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, so FAQPage markup no longer gets you the expandable FAQ boxes in Google. The markup does no harm. It's the visible FAQ text that counts now.
- Go after featured snippets. They're the original answer box and the same formatting wins them; our guide on zero-click searches and featured snippets covers the snippet formats in detail.
- Write for voice. People speak in full questions ("which is the nearest physiotherapy clinic open on Sunday?") and voice assistants read out one reply, so short, natural, conversational answers suit them.
- Make your business facts match. Name, address, phone and hours should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo or whichever directories matter in your trade. New to this? Start with our guide on how to set up a Google Business Profile.
- Check you're eligible for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Your pages must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet, and one stray nosnippet tag or a page blocked in robots.txt takes you out of the running.
- Add proof AI tools can quote: real numbers, dates, credentials and case studies. "Best service in town" gives an answer engine nothing to use.
Okay, but how do you measure AEO?
Mostly in Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report. Add a fixed set of prompts you check by hand in AI tools, and keep asking every enquiry where they found you. Rankings on their own won't tell you whether you're being quoted.

The Search Console report is new. Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports in June 2026 and had rolled them out to all websites worldwide by 31 August 2026. You get impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for generative AI features in Search and Discover.
"The AI mentioned us, but nobody called"
Normal. A mention in an AI answer often works like a recommendation from a friend: the person doesn't call straight away, they search your name later, scroll through your Google reviews and then pick up the phone. So branded searches and the plain old "how did you find us?" question matter a lot more than they look. Our post on how to get cited in AI search results explains how to earn more of those mentions.
How we do this at FavFly
At FavFly, AEO is part of our SEO work. We fix the foundation first, then rewrite the main pages answer-first and track rankings and AI visibility side by side.
That foundation does most of the heavy lifting. For DSRV India, a tax consultancy, our website SEO work took clicks up from 6K to 15K without ads, and pages that earn clicks like that are the ones answer engines tend to pull from.
We also test what AI tools really say. On 19 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT 10 buyer questions about lead-generation agencies in Kolkata. Its answers leaned on Google Maps listings and reviews, on agency directories such as GoodFirms, Semrush Agency Partners and DesignRush, and on agencies' own published case studies with numbers. The agencies whose sites state prices, cost per lead and case-study figures got named most.
That didn't surprise us much. Answer engines repeat what's written down clearly and backed by numbers, and they repeat it with more confidence when it's the same everywhere. If your site keeps prices, timelines and results under wraps, an AI tool has nothing specific to say about you. It's the thinking behind our SEO services in Kolkata.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO in simple words?
It's writing and structuring your website so AI tools and search features can quote it as the direct answer to someone's question. That covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and voice assistants. Day to day it means question-style headings, short direct answers, clear facts and business details that match everywhere.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
Nope. AEO leans on SEO. Google says its AI features run on the same core ranking systems as normal search, and a page has to be indexed and snippet-eligible before it can show up as a source. Weak SEO, and the answer engines probably won't find you or trust you.
How long does AEO take to show results?
On pages that already rank, changes like answer-first sections and FAQs can start showing up in snippets or AI answers within a few weeks of Google recrawling them. For topics where you don't rank yet, expect the same 3 to 6 months local SEO usually takes, since answer engines mostly pull from pages that already rank.
Does FAQ schema still help with AEO in 2026?
Less than it used to. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, so FAQPage markup no longer creates FAQ boxes in Google Search. Keeping it does no harm, and other platforms may still use it. What matters more now is the FAQ text people can see on your page, in your customers' own words, with short answers that stand on their own.
Is AEO worth it for a small local business?
Usually, yes. The extra work is small: mostly formatting changes to pages you already have, plus keeping your Google Business Profile and directory listings consistent. Clinics, consultants, coaching centres, interior designers and jewellers get the most from it, because their customers ask loads of questions before they call or send a WhatsApp enquiry.
How do I check if ChatGPT or Google AI mentions my business?
Make a list of 10 to 20 things your buyers really type, say "best skin clinic in Salt Lake for acne scars". Once a month, ask all of them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Are you named? Whose sites get cited? Jot it in a sheet. After that, Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
So, which one do you start with?
AEO vs SEO is much less of a fight than the internet makes it sound. SEO gets you into the room, and AEO is what gets your answer read out when someone asks a question. You don't need two budgets or two agencies. You need a healthy website and a handful of important pages rewritten, with specifics, so any answer engine can quote them.
Start small. This week, pick your top five pages and add one clear question and answer to each. Then keep an eye on Search Console and ask your next ten callers how they found you (write the answers down, because you will forget).
