Choosing a digital marketing agency in Kolkata is a lot like sari shopping in Gariahat on a Puja Saturday. Every shop swears theirs is the best, the price changes depending on who's asking, and you only spot the flaws once you're home.
The questions to ask before hiring a digital marketing agency come down to four things: proof of results for businesses like yours, clear money and contract terms, who owns your ad accounts and data, and who's going to do the work. A good agency answers all of it plainly, with numbers, before you pay a rupee.
If you've asked ChatGPT for the best digital marketing agency in Kolkata, it probably signed off with a few questions to ask. This is the long version. It's 15 questions, with what a good answer sounds like and where the red flags hide, and it works whichever agency you end up hiring (including, yes, us).
Quick answer: Ask for results from businesses like yours, with names and links you can check, and get the scope, fee, ad spend and exit terms in writing before you sign. Make sure your Google Ads account, Meta ad account, Google Business Profile and website are in your business's name. Then ask how leads will be tracked from first click to sale and who follows up, meet the people who'll run your account, and agree how often you'll talk.
First, can they get leads for a business like yours?
Judge an agency by what it has done for businesses like yours, in numbers you can check. Anyone can make a pitch deck. Named results and client references are much harder to fake.
1. "Can you show me results for a business like mine?"
Say you run a dental clinic in Salt Lake. Your neighbour in the next meeting slot is a steel trader from Howrah. You both need leads, and that's about where the similarity ends, since your buyers and their search terms have nothing in common. So ask for proof from your category, or one close to it.
What you want to hear is something like "Here are two clinics we've run Google Ads for, this one got this many calls in six months, and here's the link to the case study." What you don't want is blurred screenshots, follower counts and nothing else, or our personal favourite, "all our clients are confidential". All of them? Every single one?
2. "Can I speak to one or two of your current clients?"
A five-minute call with a current client tells you more than an hour of pitch. A good agency hands over a name and number, or offers to set up the call. Be wary of no references at all, or references who turn out to have left two years ago.
While you're at it, read the agency's Google reviews, especially the 1 to 3 star ones and how the agency replied to them. AI assistants weigh the same kind of proof, by the way. When we asked ChatGPT 10 buyer questions about lead-generation agencies in Kolkata (our own research, October 2026), its answers leaned on Google Maps listings and reviews, directories like GoodFirms, Semrush Agency Partners and DesignRush, and agencies' published case studies with numbers.
3. "What results should I expect, and by when?"
"Page 1 in 30 days, guaranteed." If you hear that, you can stop the meeting. Google's own guide to hiring an SEO says plainly that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
You do need a realistic timeline, though, because it's what you'll judge them against later. Search ads can bring enquiries within days. SEO usually takes months. A good answer is a range with a timeframe and the conditions behind it, such as "with ₹30,000 a month in ad spend, we'd expect first enquiries in week one and stable costs by month three."
4. "How will you measure success: leads, calls or sales?"
Agree on what counts as a lead before the first campaign goes live, because a "lead" that turns out to be a wrong number shouldn't count. The numbers you want tracked, together with you, are cost per lead, cost per qualified lead and, ideally, cost per sale. Our guide on how to measure Meta Ads ROI explains these.
If every report leads with reach, impressions and likes, that's a red flag. You can't pay rent with likes.
Okay, but what does it cost, and can you leave?
Before you sign, you should know what you're paying for, how much of it reaches Google and Meta, and how you get out. In writing. Yes, even if the agency belongs to your cousin's friend from college.
5 and 6. The fee, and where your ad money goes
"Full digital marketing" means nothing until it's a list. Ask what the monthly fee includes and you should get a written scope with numbers in it: campaigns managed, creatives and posts per month, landing pages, reports and review calls. Ask whether the quote includes GST, too. The warning signs are a package name with no list behind it, and extra charges that start showing up in month two.
Then the follow-up. Is ad spend separate from the fee, and who pays Google and Meta? If you can't see how much of your money reaches the platforms, you can't judge the results. The clean setup is that Google and Meta charge your card directly, the agency's fee is a separate invoice, and you can see both. One bundled figure like "₹40,000 including ads" with no breakdown should make you uneasy. If you want to estimate a sensible ad budget on your own first, our ads budget calculator will give you a starting number.
7. "How long is the lock-in, and what if I want to leave?"
Every agency relationship ends one day. Plan the exit before you start.
A fair contract usually has a short first term (often around three months, so campaigns have time to learn), then a notice period of about 30 days, plus a written handover of accounts, creatives, landing pages and data. Twelve months paid upfront, no exit clause, or the words "the ads account stays with us" are all reasons to keep looking.
8. Do they guarantee rankings or a fixed number of leads?
They shouldn't. No agency controls Google's rankings, or how many people in Behala need a root canal this month.
The honest answer sounds like this: "We can't promise rankings or lead numbers, but here's what we commit to: the work, the reporting, how fast we respond, and what we'll change if the numbers fall short." If an agency offers a refund policy, read its conditions in writing, slowly. And guaranteed #1 rankings, "100 leads guaranteed" whatever your budget, or "secret" methods they won't explain are exactly the kind of thing that sounds great in October and terrible by February.
Who owns your ad accounts and data?
You do, or you should. Your Google Ads account, Meta ad account, Google Business Profile, website and lead data should belong to your business, with the agency added as a user. If the agency owns them, you lose your history, audiences and reviews the day you leave.
9. "Whose name will the ad accounts, Google Business Profile and website be in?"
In our experience, this is the question owners most often wish they'd asked. It tends to come up over tea, after the damage is done.
Everything should sit in your business's name. You hold admin access, and the agency gets user or partner access. This matters because of how the platforms work. In Google Ads, only Admin access can give account access and change access levels. In Google Business Profile, only owners can add or remove users, and each profile has one primary owner, and that primary owner should be you, not your agency's junior executive. If you hear "we run everything from our account", or find the agency listed as primary owner of your Business Profile, fix it now while everyone's still friendly. Your domain should be registered in your name too.
10 and 11. Tracking, and whether you get to see it
Ask them straight: how will you follow a lead from first click to sale? Without tracking, you'll never know which campaign paid for itself. The answer you want covers conversion tracking that's set up properly (Meta Pixel with Conversions API, Google Ads conversion tracking, call tracking), plus a CRM that records each lead's source and outcome and sends sales data back to the ad platforms. If the plan is "We'll send you the leads in an Excel sheet" and the reporting stops there, keep looking.
Then ask to see it all yourself. Monthly PDFs are fine as summaries. But you should be able to log into the ad accounts, Google Analytics, Search Console and the CRM whenever you like, and the monthly report should tell you what changed and what happens next. "You don't need access, we'll send a report" is a sentence we'd walk out on.
12. How fast will leads reach your team?
A lead that waits a day for a call is usually gone. Look for instant notifications on WhatsApp, email or in a CRM, a clear agreement on who calls (your team or theirs) and some advice on response time. Leads downloaded once a day, or once a week, with no conversation about follow-up? No thanks.
Who's going to run your account?
The person who pitches is often not the person who runs your campaigns. So meet the team, find out who your day-to-day contact is, and agree on how you'll talk.
13. "Who will work on my account, and is any of it outsourced?"
You're hiring people, so find out who they are. You want names and roles, a single point of contact, and honesty about what's done in-house and what isn't. An office in Kolkata you can walk into helps more than you'd think. The pattern to avoid is the classic one, where the senior person sells, an unnamed junior runs everything, and nobody can tell you who that junior is.
14. "How often will we talk, and where?"
Most agency breakups start with silence, long before the numbers drop. A WhatsApp group or similar for regular updates, a monthly review call and a clear reply time (the same working day is reasonable) will save you a lot of grief. "Email us", followed by three-day replies, or hearing from them only when the invoice is due, won't.
15. "What will you need from me?"
We like this one as a test. Good marketing needs your input: your offers, your pricing, photos of your work and honest feedback on lead quality. A serious agency will give you a short list with deadlines, such as approvals within 48 hours, a weekly lead-quality check and a person on your side to answer enquiries.
If they say "Nothing, just sit back and relax", don't relax.
How FavFly answers these
We expect clients to ask every one of these. Frankly, we'd rather you did.
Proof first, for questions 1 and 3. Our portfolio and case studies name the client and the number, so you can check them. Rehabana's hyper-local 10 km Google Ads campaign brought 436 direct patient calls. Bosky Interior reached 120 to 160 leads per month from website SEO. And SMCD, a luxury jeweller, saw 295% ROI from Meta Ads.
References (question 2)? We have 300+ Google reviews, we've worked with 450+ clients since 2018, and we're a Meta Business Partner. Read the bad reviews too. We would.
Tracking, questions 10 to 12, runs through UnifyLeads, our lead tracking CRM. It follows each lead from source to sale and comes built into our Lead10X programme along with WhatsApp follow-up. As for question 13, we're at Golaghata Road, Dakshindari, in Kolkata, so come and meet the people who'd run your account.
If our answers don't fit what you need, the list still works for finding an agency that does. There's more about our services on the digital marketing company in Kolkata page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a digital marketing agency in Kolkata?
Shortlist three with case studies in your industry and decent Google reviews. Ask all three the same 15 questions, get the proposals in writing and line them up: scope, fees, who owns the ad accounts, how tracking works. Ring at least one current client of each. Then go with whoever gave you specific answers with numbers in them, even if that isn't the cheapest quote.
How much does a digital marketing agency in Kolkata cost?
Depends what you're buying. From what we see in Kolkata, small businesses usually pay retainers starting around ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month for one channel (say, social media or Google Ads management). Multi-channel costs more. Ad spend is on top, paid to Google or Meta. Oh, and ask whether GST is in that number.
What are the red flags when hiring a marketing agency?
Guaranteed rankings or lead numbers, long lock-ins paid upfront, your ad accounts or Google Business Profile in the agency's name, reports that only show reach and likes, no client references, vague scopes, and any agency that won't put in writing what it'll do each month.
Should I own my Google Ads and Meta ad accounts?
Yes, always. Your ad accounts, pixel, Google Business Profile and website should be in your business's name with you as admin, and the agency added as a user or partner, so your campaign history, audiences, reviews and data stay with you and changing agencies doesn't mean starting from zero.
How long should I give a new agency before judging results?
Give Google Search Ads and Meta Ads around 60 to 90 days to test campaigns and settle costs. You'll learn a lot sooner than that about setup quality, tracking and communication, since the first month shows most of it. SEO is slower. Allow 4 to 6 months before you judge rankings and leads, though you should still get a monthly progress report showing the work done.
Ask the hard questions, then hire
A good agency won't mind these 15 questions. It'll probably be relieved, because clear answers make the whole relationship easier for both sides. So print the checklist, take it to the next meeting and compare the answers side by side. You'll walk in knowing what good looks like. And a weak pitch usually gives itself away inside ten minutes.
